Costa Rica Fishing FACTS and RECORDS The heavier wind patterns in this region of Costa Rica lie a few hours to the north of Herradura giving us mostly calm seas all year round and more fishing time than boats in the North of Costa Rica. The fishing grounds in Costa Rica are between 12 and 35 miles from shore. During Costa Rica's peak fishing season it's common to release a dozen or more sails and even a marlin or two in a single day. The all time tournament record of 1,691 billfish releases by 120 anglers in four days was established in Costa Rica a few years ago during the International Sailfish Tournament
